Flexible Work Options Allow Us to Create the ‘Everywhere Workforce’
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed everything we have always known about the workplace. Zoom’s CEO, Eric S. Yuan, mentions the three pillars – talent, transformation and trust, which he believes are the most essential for companies in order to build towards the future. The core of a successful business is the people who work there, using their talents as essential pillar for building organizations, the transformation from in office work to hybrid or remote work, and giving employees the tools to implement this transformation in coordination with their employers.
Generating the Hybrid Workforce
After an unprecedented 12 months since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, much of the world is finally ready to start going back to a life that more closely resembles life before the pandemic. However, this is a different story for organizations which were predominantly in-office, and who are now adapting to life in this new hybrid era.
To adapt and provide flexibility at the core of business operations, many employers are giving the freedom of choice to employees. Rather than forcing all employees to be based in the office, they are giving employees the flexibility to choose to work remotely, to be office based or have a combination of both. This greatly increases employee satisfaction and allows employers to access a much larger talent pool as they are no longer restricted by location.
Karin Kimbrough, Chief Economist at LinkedIn
“We’re seeing a huge increase in demand for remote work on our platform, one that will have a significant long-term impact on the labour market. Globally, we’re seeing four times the number of jobs that offer remote work since March. We also see that trend reflected from jobseekers: the volume of job searches using the ‘Remote’ filter on LinkedIn has increased ~60% since the beginning of March, and the share of Remote Job Applications has increased nearly 2.5 times globally from March.”
Employees working in a hybrid workplace have access to a wide variety of benefits, including:
- Location Flexibility — Employees gain the freedom to work outside the office anywhere which has an internet connection while giving the same level of service.
- Flexible time— Employees can maintain a healthier work-life balance with the ability to balance time between the office and home.
It is not only employees who benefit from a hybrid workplace. Organizations also see benefits with:
- Broader access to talent— Employers now have the option to hire the best candidates globally as well as locally.
- Increased productivity— By giving employees greater choice in how and where they work, organizations often see a great improvement in employee satisfaction, resulting in increased productivity.
- Real estate flexibility— With more employees choosing to work remotely, organizations now have more flexibility in how they use and invest in their office locations.
Embracing technology and applying flexibility
Organizations must now be restructured around creating this hybrid workforce where instead of clocking in and out, employees are permitted to decide where and how they wish to work and are appraised on results from this.
It is apparent that embracing this change and giving employees the flexibility to choose to work anywhere, creates an empowered and happier workforce; but logistically how is this achieved?
To enable the ‘Everywhere Workforce’, organizations must implement support and technology to both employees based in the office and remote workers. Flexible workspaces are required by embracing current technologies such as virtual conference rooms, video communications and virtual receptionists alongside purpose-built hardware to fit all needs.
All employees require a workspace that involves an integrated video platform to allow suitable meeting interactions whether they are based in the office, at home or in a shared workspace.
Zoom’s integrated video, chat and meeting rooms along with Zoom phone, provide the flexibility required to successfully transition organizations to these new arrangements, regardless of the location of the employee.
